Introduction to Belt and Road Tropical Medical Alliance (BRTMA)
As the only medical university in tropical region in China, Hainan Medical University (HNMU) has carried out tropical medicine research since the 1970s. In 2004, the party committee of the university formally proposed to establish a medical university with distinctive tropical characteristics by inserting tropical medicine as a school-running characteristic into its plan. In 2017, Hainan Provincial Government issued a document to set ‘promote Hainan Medical University to become a high-level medical university with distinctive characteristics of tropical medicine' as the development goal of HNMU. Since then, the tropical medicine of HNMU has entered the phase of leap-forward development. HNMU has been preparing the tropical medicine institute and deepening the collaboration with famous experts and institutes worldwide. The preparatory committee and secretariat of BRTMA were established in April 2018, who drafted the ‘Articles of BRTMA (consultation version)’ and the ‘Haikou Declaration (consultation version)’, designed the alliance logo, and sent invitations to medical universities, institutions, scientific research and public health agencies along the countries and regions of Belt and Road area. 105 medical universities, scientific research and public health institutions from 30 countries and regions sent back positive response as co-sponsors.
